Two steps forward, one step back

Given the circumstances, the last few days have gone extremely well. That's not to say our days haven't been without challenge- we've experienced multiple tantrums that have brought both Jenna and I to tears, but all-in-all, we're a week in and everyone is still alive and we're progressing daily.

The valley's remain challenging but fortunately the peak's have become more frequent and make up for the difficult times. While driving to the Bird Park today I felt a tap on my arm and heard a soft "Daddy, Daddy" come from the seat behind me. I turned around and Nomathemba was trying to get my attention. I reached my arm around to the back seat and she held my fingers while we drove through the streets of downtown Johannesburg. In hindsight, probably not the smartest idea as I was driving a manual transmission on the opposite side of the road in a foreign country but I couldn't resist. A few hours later she elected to sit on my lap while eating lunch. I'm hopeful that she'll continue to warm up to me as she begins to feel more comfortable.

Below is a brief recap of our past few days in Jo'burg-

  • Thursday our amazing host Christine took us to an "Eco Lodge" (Hotel with wildlife roaming the grounds). The kids were able to burn off some energy on the playground while we had a cup of coffee and enjoyed the beautiful weather and animals:

The girls with Mr. Peacock protecting his chicks in the background.

Killing two birds with one stone- Sister's bonding and Kara working on her independent study.
Mommy painted someone's nails...

  • Saturday we visited a Christmas celebration event at a local wedding venue that was located within a beautiful "forest" The event had live music, local crafts, food truck, various outdoor activities and most importantly- horses:

  • Today (Sunday) we visited the Bird Park at the Montecasino in northern Johannesburg. When we brought Nomathemba home she was terrified of animals but she’s slowly warmed up and even begun to show a slight interest in them over the past couple days.

  • This evening our hosts took us to a Christmas concert located at a church built in the mid-1800's. After the event we were invited back to their friends home for tea and dessert.

Finally, tomorrow morning at 8:30 am we have our court appointment to officially adopt Nomathemba. We would appreciate your prayers- that our family find favor with the Judge and that all documentation is correct and in place. Thanks so much!!!
